Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center chooses one-stop solution from Cummins

Wednesday, July 28, 2010 by Flavio Mello
Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center has installed one 1750 kW diesel generator set and five 1750 kW lean-burn natural gas generator sets. Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center has installed one 1750 kW diesel generator set and five 1750 kW lean-burn natural gas generator sets.

According to Don Gesick, general manager, Energy Solutions Business (ESB) Americas, “The customer chose Cummins Power Generation (CPG) primarily because of our “Power of One” solution. The ESB, Commercial Products and Power Electronics business units, together with two distributors, combined forces to deliver a design, product and service solution that includes one 1750 kW diesel generator and five 1750 kW lean-burn gas generators, as well as paralleling switchgear, transfer switches, installation reviews and commissioning services.

Peter Schroeck, manager of ESB business development, noted that there is a growing market for lean-burn natural gas-generated backup and supplemental power.

Summarizing the advantages of a duel-fuel approach, Schroeck also noted that, “Diesel power provides the quick-starting capability that is required for emergency standby power. Lean-burn natural gas, on the other hand, complements the diesel capability, allowing for maximum power availability.

When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, for example, many areas were without power for over a week. The average on-site diesel storage tank typically provides fuel for 8 – 24 hours, while natural gas offers an almost limitless supply of fuel that is not usually interrupted by hurricanes. The overall CPG solution provides the advantages of both fuel types.

While not on the Gulf Coast, Baton Rouge is in the “hurricane zone,” and this factor was not overlooked when ESB and Cummins Mid-South personnel, Bob Hamilton (sales manager) and John Sarris (commercial sales engineer), counseled the customer to choose a duel-fuel solution with both diesel and lean-burn natural gas units.

Employees at Cummins Power Generation HQ partner with two nonprofits, win corporate Environmental Challenge award

Wednesday, July 28, 2010 by Madeline Foss
Among those attending a special celebration were Cummins Inc. Chairman and CEO Tim Solso (front row, far left), and Cummins Power Generation President Tony Satterthwaite (back row, fourth from right).

Employees of Cummins Power Generation in Fridley recently won a prestigious corporate award from the parent company for helping to make it easier for residents to recycle at Parkview Villa in Fridley. Parkview Villa is an affordable housing community residence operated by CommonBond Communities, which serves the elderly and people with disabilities. In addition, a resident at Parkview Villa who is a RISE Inc. program participant was hired to collect recyclable materials throughout the building. RISE, Inc. is a Twin Cities-based nonprofit that supports people who have disabilities and other barriers to employment and safe, affordable housing.

As a result of the project, recycling participation by the residents has increased by 50 percent, and the employees who organized it were recognized in the Environmental Challenge that was part of Cummins’ 90th anniversary celebration. Employees around the globe responded to the Environmental Challenge by working on 62 separate projects. Of those, 13 projects were selected to receive $10,000 grants from the Cummins Foundation to donate to nonprofit community partners of the employees’ choice.

This group of employees demonstrated long-standing commitment to the communities where the company has facilities. They realized one of Cummins’ corporate goals: “Demanding that everything we do leads to a cleaner, healthier, safer environment.”

Cummins makes Bloomberg Businessweek list of 50 best-performing stocks

Wednesday, July 28, 2010 by Madeline Foss

The Bloomberg Businessweek 50 is an honor roll of large publicly held American companies. The 50 companies have the best record of all the companies in the S&P 500 as measured by total return —share price appreciation plus dividends — during the previous five years.

Cummins Inc. ranked #12 on this list, with a five-year total return of 278%. The brief profile of the company notes that first-quarter revenues for 2010 were up 2% over 2009, and that overseas growth compensated for a decline in North American revenue. The article on the list is available here.

Cummins Power Generation powers the Taste of Minnesota celebration

Tuesday, July 27, 2010 by Madeline Foss

Sammy Hagar, Counting Crows, the Gin Blossoms, 311, Haley Bonar, the Retribution Gospel Choir . . . and Cummins Power Generation . . . they all performed at the 2010 Taste of Minnesota celebration.

Powering 100 hours worth of musical acts, and keeping the food hot and the drinks cold, was the responsibility of Cummins NPower, the exclusive distributor for Cummins Power Generation in the Upper Midwest. Cummins NPower provided a complete power solution for the event, including 20 trailerized rental generator sets in a range of sizes: 20 kW, 50 kW, 60 kW, 150 kW and 200 kW.

The annual event’s new management offered national, regional and local musical acts on five stages, while 40+ local restaurants served up savory and satisfying cuisine. The management also opened the power generation contract for bids for the first time, and Cummins NPower captured the business.

According to Tom Smith, rental sales manager, Cummins NPower, all the generator sets were brought on-site in one trip, with several trucks caravanning to Harriet Island on the Mississippi River. Once there, all the equipment was set up and ready to go in just two days.

Smith noted, “As part of a nationwide network of Cummins distributors, we’re able to cooperate and work together to mobilize any number of units from other geographic areas, if needed, to bring a large event together. For this event, we partnered with Cummins Crosspoint, a distributor from the southeastern U.S. But to event management, we were an easy-to-work-with single, local presence, with uniform product, service and attention to quality.”

Harriet Island, across from downtown St. Paul, was the scene of the 28th annual Taste of Minnesota.

Return Traditional Values to Sender, Hello Social Media!

Monday, July 26, 2010 by Serene Gwee
Dear readers,

Try recalling the effort you took to mail a handwritten letter, complete with a self-adhesive stamp and dropping it into the mailbox; or painstakingly flipping through the flimsy pages of a directory in search of a telephone number. It may seem like a lifetime ago but the strange thing is, those moments were never too far behind.

The internet explosion led us well into a myriad of online activities that one only previously dreamt of experiencing. The exponential reach that the Internet can, and have already achieved, proved to staggering.

If Facebook were a country, it would be the fourth largest in the world. Not at all surprising. Radio took a whopping 38 years to reach out to 50 million users while Facebook took only a mere fraction of 6 months. Add that to the existing users of Youtube, Linkedin and other social media sites, the numbers are phenomenal.

For the benefit of our readers who are grappling with the aforementioned terms, they are simply the new wave of technology taking the Internet generation by storm, also known as “Social Media”- an online network that allows people to share opinions, insights, experiences and perspectives with one another.

The evolution of social media did not take place overnight. It manifested more than a decade ago when sites were created to allow users to create profiles, make and/or add friends whom they could interact with. Popular sites that made an impressionable impact, such as Friendster and ICQ Buddy, may still ring a bell for some of the mature marketers.

So, is social media a fad, or is it here to stay?  I am partial to the latter; for the basic principle of networking and socializing via online technologies is set to increase exponentially.

How can this be applied to the world of business, you ask? Plenty as you can imagine. B2C companies have long jumped onto the bandwagon; embracing social media and making it part of their marketing strategies. Take Dell, one of the first few organizations that started a humble online blog, which in turn allowed them to extend their reach to the media-savvy potential and existing customers. Through the “grapevine effect”, these customers spread the information through word-of-mouth, or simply by sharing links, and awareness is inevitably achieved.

Cummins Power Generation is not lagging behind either; social media now plays an essential part of many initiatives that we embark on. The general idea is to keep up with the online trends, which are related to power generation and offer relevant information to the various industries and markets that we serve.

We hope to disseminate information on our products and services that can be easily retrieved by a wider audience comprising of engineers, contractors, dealers, distributors, employees, OEMs, commercial end users and homeowners.  By using a mix of approaches, we aim to reach out and listen to our audience effectively. These include our websites, social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube.

We have also specially created our own blog dedicated to the on-goings at Cummins Power Generation- this is where we upload articles from newsletters and share pertinent power generation news. These initiatives are not time-based projects. Their effectiveness will be monitored continuously and modified as needed by the social media core team – a global team of market leaders from various regions.

As you read this article from our blog, my 80-year-old grandmother should be navigating Facebook in search of her great-grandson latest pictures taken by his parents whom are based in Hong Kong. The beauty of social media certainly has no age limit! Have fun surfing our pages.

Cummins Power Generation, one of the leading players in the development and manufacture of pre-integrated power systems was proud to be a co-partner for this event.
Cummins Power Generation’s authorised sole distributor in Sri Lanka, Trade Promoters Limited (TPL), showcased highlights of Cummins Power Generation’s low emissioned generators, the QSL9 series, and the X1.3 from its compact series. The display of these two products showed Cummins Power Generation’s commitment to leading the way in developing power solutions that will also reduce its carbon footprint.

An open type C220D5e generator set powered by a Cummins QSB7 engine was displayed at the booth while an enclosed version of the same genset welcomed visitors at the entrance.

The C11D5 compact generator set powered by the Cummins X1.3 engine was launched with the display of a soundproofed version at the booth. To further reinforce the concept of Power of One, PE components such as GTEC and PCC Simulator were installed at the booth. To enhance the Cummins Power Generation and TPL profiles, presentation videos of Cummins Power Generation as well as TPL key projects were played on large screens located in the booth and at the entrance to the main hall.

The Cummins Power Generation booth welcomed industry players from state owned power generation and distribution companies as well as eminent guest - the Chairman of Ceylon Electricity Board (event guest of honour) who was impressed with Cummins Power Generation’s commitment to leading the market in relation to emissions compliance and the company’s innovative approach to the development of cleaner, greener and quieter engines.

The outstanding overall presentation of the booth (from the attractive design to the strong Cummins Power Generation brand presentation, lighting and screen displays) prompted the Chairman for CAT distributor in Sri Lanka to pay a tribute to the Cummins Power Generation booth.

While many took a keen interest in the interactive demonstration carried out by TPL sales staff using the PCC simulator, much to the delight of budding engineers in the industry, it was Jeffrey Koh’s closing speech urging genset vendors in Sri Lanka to come together to address industry issues, as well as to diminish barriers for the benefit of the industry and country, that really struck a chord with the audience.

Energy Company Expands its Operations

Friday, July 23, 2010 by Serene Gwee
An Australian Energy Company owns and operates a number of peaking power stations within Australia, one of which is a 20 MW non-scheduled peaking power generation facility located in the Southern suburb of Lonsdale, Adelaide, South Australia. The Lonsdale plant built in 2001 by Cummins Energy Solution Business consists of 18 x 1125 kW containerised generator sets generating at 415 volts stepped up via individual transformers to 11 kV and connected to the Utility Network substation adjacent to the site, overall control of the system being provided by a Cummins DMC300 master controller.

Existing Lonsdale Plant

On the success of its existing plant, the Energy Company has once again engaged Cummins Energy Solutions Business to expand its operations in South Australia by an additional 65 MW consisting of 36 x QSK60G4 generator sets, making it one of the largest diesel powered non-scheduled peaking power facilities in the Southern hemisphere.

For commercial reasons the existing 20 MW plant will retain the name “Lonsdale” plant whilst the new 65 MW plant will be known as the “Port Stanvac” plant.

To enable the overall expansion works in order to proceed with the existing 18 Cummins KTA50 powered containerised generating set units, associated transformers and switchgear from the Lonsdale site will be moved to a new location. The new site is to the Northwest of the present location across an existing public road that is to be retained.
The task confronting Cummins is both challenging and demanding as both sites are required to be completed and in operation by early December 2010. This is to ensure that the Energy Company is able to capitalise on providing power to meet the summer electrical peak demands that occur on the Utility Network from December to March each year in South Australia.

Showing the Lonsdale generating sets in their original position.  The new location for these
sets is to the North, shown bounded in mauve.  The new Port Stanvac site will be located in
the area bounded in green.

The new Port Stanvac station of 36 x QSK60G4 generator sets will consist of two groups of 18 housed in two large buildings generating at 11 kV and connected to the Utilities network via an outdoor switchyard with two, 40.5 MVA, 11 kV / 66 kV step up transformers and accompanying 66 kV outdoor circuit breakers.

Cummins Energy Solutions Business (ESB) are contracted to provide the Energy Company a complete solution including all required federal, state and local approvals, civil, mechanical and electrical design, construction and commissioning.

As always, Cummins has met the customers challenge head on with works on both sites well advanced. 85% relocation of the Lonsdale plant has been achieved and the first building with its contents of QSK60G4 generator sets in place is 75% completed with the second building well underway.

In conjunction with ESB Cummins Power Electronics, are supplying for the new Port Stanvac site two major 11 kV switchrooms complete with Schneider 11 kV switchgear, numerous small control panels and distribution boards and a Cummins DMC300 master controller for overall system control. Two new ABB 11 kV Utility Network supply breakers are also being provided for the relocated Lonsdale site to satisfy current electricity regulations.

Keep your eyes posted for further updates in months to come on this exciting Cummins project.

Confirmed - Cummins Onan RS20A Home Standby Generator Electrical Power is Best in Quality

Tuesday, July 20, 2010 by Chad Boutet

An independent report by SGS U.S. Testing Company compares residential backup generators rated at or near 20 kW made by the top U.S. manufacturers. The tests, which measured and characterized voltage and frequency stability and response time, showed that the RS20A power backup generator from Cummins Onan was clearly superior. In fact, it was the only unit to be rated as G2 (Residential Grade).

The generators were evaluated using the industry standard ISO8528-5 test procedure for rating of G1 (Marginal) or G2 (Residential Grade). This rating takes into account the stability and response time of the electricity delivered from the generator.

How an emergency generator responds to load changes in the home is critical to ensure the devices in the home operate properly, efficiently, and safely. If it takes too long for the voltage or frequency to respond, devices like air conditioners, washing machines, and dimmer switches will stop operating. If the voltage or frequency rises too much or too fast as loads are turned off, expensive electronics or appliances may be damaged. Erratic voltage will also cause lights to flicker and generate disturbing noise from generator.

To ensure proper operation of devices in a home, a G1 rated generator is a bare minimum, and a G2 rated generator is highly recommended.

Our technology that is entrusted with powering top wonders such as Statue of Liberty and critical applications such as firefighter’s vehicles has delivered yet again in providing a reliable performance for household consumers.

Home Standby Generator Design Overview: The science behind RS20A aesthetic design

Friday, July 9, 2010 by Chad Boutet

Besides being the most aesthetically appealing in its class, the design of Cummins Onan Home Standby generator provides significant operational and performance advantages over its competitors. While designing this product, Cummins Onan engineers considered every aspect of a generator - seamless and efficient operation, lowest noise levels, minimal vibrations, all-weather function, simple installation, and easy maintenance. Not surprisingly, they came up with the quietest and most efficient standby generator in its class.

The RS20A residential generator uses Cummins Onan patented double-walled sound dampening technology. The double-walled generator design utilizes long air-flow paths and acoustic chambers to provide the lowest sound level ever offered in its class - all with the end user and neighbors in mind. Other manufacturers rely on a single wall design that does little to curtail unwanted noise and ultimately result in harsher tones and higher noise levels.

The  air louvers located along the bottom edge of the circular roof provide an efficient inflow and outflow of air even in harsh weather. The height of  the air louvers helps to ensures that the air is not cut-off in case of heavy snow   and the horizontal air louver design reduces water ingestion in heavy rain– to ensure  you can enjoy uninterrupted power supply even in the harshest conditions.

A secure built-in base  not only reduces annoying vibrations, but it also eliminates the need and cost of pouring a concrete slab  – for you to save time and money. Further, a single door lift-off design allows effortless installation and maintenance. Plug and play harnesses also make the installation much quicker and easy to understand.

Rupert Murdoch’s News Ltd Australia appoints Cummins Power Generation

Monday, June 28, 2010 by Serene Gwee
Australia’s largest newspaper publisher, News Ltd, has chosen Cummins Power Generation to supply its Sydney headquarters with a new turn-key power solution. News Ltd publications account for around 70% of Australia’s circulation; it electronically produces principal dailies such as The Australian (Australia’s only national daily broadsheet), The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph. As the world’s leading power supplier with a strong presence in over 190 countries, Cummins Power Generation provides some of the world’s largest organisation with reliable and quality power systems – and News Ltd is no exception. In working with News Ltd, Australia’s largest newspaper publisher, owned by Media Mogul Rupert Murdoch, Cummins Power Generation needed to develop an emergency power system to ensure the company’s data centre, which operates round the clock worldwide was kept running and producing its publications.

Cummins Power Generation put together a power package for News Ltd that comprised of three Cummins C350D5 generator sets complete with Cummins PowerCommand 3100 digital paralleling equipment and a Cummins DMC1000 digital master control system. To serve the needs of News Ltd, the Cummins C350D5 generator sets work in conjunction with a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) system of batteries. In the event of a mains failure, the UPS system maintains power supply until the three generator sets come online and take over within 10 seconds. On the other hand, the Cummins DMC1000 digital master control system monitors the building load, provides load control as well as provides a function called load demand which ensures the generator sets running, are only those needed to meet the building’s demands.

This effectively reduces unnecessary running of the generators and improves fuel economy. A large challenge that Cummins Power Generation faced was to maintain emergency power to News Ltd headquarters during the removal of the old generator sets and installation of the new system to keep the headquarters at maximum operational efficiency during this period of change. David Van Brussel, Contracts Manager, Cummins South Pacific and Greg Conrad, Sales Executive, Cummins South Pacific, both of whom headed up this turn-key project, provided a solution by working closely with News Ltd to co-ordinate the installation of a temporary 750 kVA Cummins Power Generation QST30 generator set. This allowed Cummins Power Generation to gut the plat room, install the new generator sets, generator switchboard and DMC1000, and fully test the new emergency power generator system in only four weeks before use. Providing top-notch quality service, excellent after-sales support and instilling confidence in the client in Cummins Power Generation’s products and capability have always and will continue to be what sets Cummins Power Generation apart from its contemporaries.

True enough, these qualities are echoed by Rob Taylor, facilities engineering consultant for News Ltd, as he says, “The installation is excellent as has been the support from Cummins.”

How much are we exposed to a power outage? How does a power disruption affects our normal lives?

Tuesday, June 22, 2010 by Chad Boutet

power outageA quick google news search for power outage tells us that we had at least seven instances of power outage in US over the last weekend of June 20th, ranging from a serious disruption that blackened out an entire county and affected 200,000 customers in Chicago to a moderate one that affected few areas in Michiana (64,000 customers) and Milan (3,500 customers). The most common cause of a power outage is severe weather with thunderstorms and tornados leading this category.  Power interruptions have also been reported after a small scale accident.

Needless to say, power disruption is an inconvenience. As per WNDU news, many families are already struggling with spoiled food and mounting frustrations as they wait for the power to return after June 20th weekend. The stakes are even higher for families with health concerns or families with kids. For the elderly, or for people who have specialized medical equipment such as electronic respirators, power outages can be life threatening. Extended power outages during extreme winter storms can leave families dangerously stranded within their own homes and even cause the water lines to be jammed. Power outage may also force businesses to lose significant revenues. It is clear from recent outage news that the power disruption can occur anywhere and everywhere and it is advisable that one installs a home standby generator (Residential Generator) to prepare for the same.

How can I prepare myself against any power outage?

Monday, June 21, 2010 by Chad Boutet

Power restoration may take few hours to several days depending upon the damage and evidently it disrupts the normal life. Extended periods of power loss are inconvenient and potentially dangerous. It is, thus, vital that you have an emergency power backup. This is where a generator comes into play. Most widely used generators for home usage are – portable gensets and standby residential generators. A residential generator has obvious advantages over a portable genset- automatic start, permanent fixture, more power, cleaner fuel (natural gas or propane), low running costs and cold weather-kit. Within moments of an electrical interruption, a home standby generator provides electricity to power essential items or whole house. It is easy to understand the complex but seamless operation of a home backup generator and transfer switch using this video.

It is important that the essential items in the house are always powered. For some this may mean a fridge, water pump, oven and a few lights. For others essential items may include medical equipment, TV for the kids, heating and air conditioning and so on. Perhaps you want to continue living normally as if no power failure ever occurred in the first place! In this case you would like to power your entire house. It is imperative that you select the right size for your standby generator. This automatic tool and this video can help you estimate your power needs and help you with your selection. You should also consider fuel type, noise, ease of operation and maintenance, configuration options, remote monitoring, aesthetic, last but not the least – performance, while making your selection. After a residential generator has been installed at your house, rest assured that everything around you may stop but you’ll never feel powerless!

Now Available - RS20A Residential Stand By Generator

Wednesday, June 9, 2010 by Chad Boutet

After much planning and anticipation the RS20 is in production. This new product will strengthen the overall residential generator portfolio and fill a gap in the air cooled line. The RS20 will be available in both a warm weather and cold weather specification. Cummins Onan is the first company to offer a factory installed weather specification. This option will make it easier for consumers to understand features that need to be considered based on their geographic location and will eliminate the need for installers to take extra time to install extra accessories to ensure the generators operate to there full potential.

In addition to the new cold weather specification, major steps have been taken to make the installation easier. A new single door design makes accessing the generator for installation and maintenance a snap. Plug and play harnesses also make the installation much quicker and easy to understand

The RS20A generator is the quietest and most ascetically appealing product in its class continuing to deliver on Cummins Onan commitment to building premium products.
